Clover Poetry Series: A Teen's Take on Expectations

Clover Poetry Series: A Teen's Take on Expectations

When I wrote "Expectations," I was really upset about the way that I'd recently been treated by some relatives who are more "traditional." So many people I know don't have enough confidence to do what they want to do because of constant negative comments coming from those who surround them. I wrote it to reassure myself that I'm free to be who I want to be, even if the people around me don't approve.

"Expectations"

Sometimes
I hide inside
of my mind
when I hear their voices.
'You should be-'
'Why aren't you-'
'Girls are supposed to-'
Sigh and breathe
Exhale the toxic speak
rid myself of their
poisonous limitations
and I'll be free
