10 Girls Get Real About: What They're Thankful for in 2016

I am really thankful for people just being themselves unapologetically. It’s SO important to be vulnerable, and it really helps me to be unapologetic with my truths if I see others doing the same. Visibility! Woo! I am also so thankful to Frida Kahlo for making such raw self-portrait art, and others who do the same. I don’t know where I would be in terms of my own mental health and my creative process had no one ever started telling their story through their own self. — Tazia, 20

I’m thankful for my wonderful friends, who support and accept me despite my flaws; I’m thankful for my family who give me unconditional love; I’m thankful that chocolate exists; and I’m thankful for the fact that I’m alive and well even though everything may not be perfect all the time in my life. — Rivers, 15

I’m thankful for my friends who support me and love me no matter what, and who are absolutely and unapologetically who they are. I’m also thankful that we don’t have a lot of drama within our group of friends, because we all respect each other. — Aria, 15

I’m thankful for the new friends and new opportunities that met me upon moving to another country, no matter how difficult it was in the beginning. — Hafsah, 15

I’m thankful for the opportunities given to me this year that have more than surpassed my dreams when I was a child. I’m thankful for the successful people in the world who see the potential that young people have and give them the opportunity to prove themselves. I’m thankful to know that I’m not alone, and despite what has happened in the last few weeks, that many strong-minded girls like myself stick together and know that there is strength in numbers. — Megan, 18

I’m thankful for education. I’m just about to receive my offers for university (today actually — eek!) but I’m thankful for the fact that I am able to obtain a higher education than secondary school. I think it’s very important, and in a world where many girls do not receive an education, I’m thankful that I do. — Lizzie, 19

I’m thankful to have excellent friends and family who love and support me…and also Broad City. — Sarah, 18

I’m thankful for life itself. My family, my friends, and the community I’ve become involved with both online and offline. — Alexandra, 18

I’m thankful for Gilmore Girls and psyched for their new episodes. But on a more serious note, I am so thankful to be surrounded by others who love and support me and push me to be my absolute best self. — Madison, 20

I’m thankful for having compassionate and supportive friends who accept me for who I am but also inspire and encourage me to step outside my comfort zone and convince me to try quirky (but cool!) things with them. I’m also thankful for art, writing, and music. All three are such important parts of my life, providing methods of self expression and acting as emotional outlets. The artists I’ve encountered are so supportive of each other and inspire me to keep trying and learning even when I feel small or stuck. — Kelly, 17
