Clover Poetry Series: My Single Mom

The inspiration behind this piece is my mother. Since the very beginning, I have seen her continuously working from dusk to dawn, pushing herself and always looking after me and my other two siblings. My father abandoned us years ago. He was there, but never really there for us. Eventually my mother made the brave decision of leaving this man. Many years later, I'm so happy to have her because she's truly all I really need. Life would not be the same if it were not for my mother. And despite everything that’s happened, I am grateful for it. She is the epitome of strength, and my role model for life.

Yes I was shocked to learn
That a single mother
Bearing three children was considered weak
That the only time a woman is strong
Is when she has a man by her side?
Those families were complete
Where the role of the father was present
The “man” of the family
Who was not man enough to give love when
He was required to
Yet the fingers of the society that we thrive in
Point towards the woman like a compass
A society where a single woman is an odd pea in the pod
The work she does, the strength required to bring up her vulnerable children
To protect them against the harsh wind of words
She takes knives to her own chest
She would rather bleed than see her own bleeding
She is a warrior at war
She, who is a father and a mother,
A single mother is not weak
She is the epitome of strength
And those who are too blind to see that
Can point fingers all they want
For they can never be her
